Take a walk down to the Church Square where you can view the Cathedral of St Michael and St George which boasts the tallest spire in SA. The Winged Figure of Peace which is situated on the island at the top of Bathurst and High Street represents a monument to "the Men of Albany" who lost their lives in the Anglo-Boer War of 1899-1902. The sculpture is by Stanley Nicholson Babb and the inscription was written by Rudyard Kipling. The site was chosen as one which was "in the midst of our daily work and so would serve as perpetual remembrance of the dead and be an inspiration for peace". In Church Square you will also find Birch's( department store and official robe makers and ask to see their "pulley communication system". The Methodist Commemmoration Church in lower High Street is also worth a visit. The Church can seat 1 200, has ten stained glass memorial windows and boasts one of the finest organs in the country.
